This is one of two hand colored Chromolithograph horse portraits being offered. Published in the 1890 History of Celebrated Thoroughbred Stallions and French Mares. These are the original chromolithographs from that publication.
Chromolithography first became successful in the 19th century. While this process was the beginning of colored prints, hand colouring still remained an important part of the process. Early pieces such as this one involved the use of multiple stones, one for each color. The process could take up to a month to produce one piece if there were many colors involved.
The condition is very good, no stains, tears or creases. The chromolithograph has been custom framed with textured matting, a gold filet inset and wooden frame. Under archival glass.
