French Nude

This is an original oil on canvas by the late French artist Jean Langlois.  The painting was done during the mid century in what he referred to as his Periode Brune or Brown Period.  Commanding in scale it is pairs Langlois' enduring study of the human form with a richly restrained palette of ochre, umber, golden yellow, and deep crimson brown. Expressive brushwork and simplified form give the reclining figure a remarkable presence, while the bold geometric background introduces a distinctly modernist quality. The result is a compelling intersection of classical French figuration and 20th-century modernism.
