The Artist

According to Rolling Stone Magazine, artist Steve Keene is your favorite band’s favorite painter, and is the Picasso of music fanatics. In the early 1990’s, Steve DJ’d at WTJU radio in Charlottesville, surrounded by incredible music and 1000’s of albums, and so it began. Steve now lives in New York, and still creates art daily. To date he has sold over 300,000 paintings.

The Painting

Bad Kids appears to depict the unique times of the American Revolution, but what it represents is still a mystery. Was the kid badass, or just a bad kid? Was he too short to ride the rollercoaster?  In addition to music, Keene was also inspired by the eclectic collections in his childhood home. In an interview with Garden and Gun magazine in 2022, Keene explains “Growing up in Virginia, my own parents had all these weird historical, collectible things. I wanted my art to be like an American collectible.” Maybe it simply an ode to the founding of the United States of America!
